It lasts just about forever. This is how Doug Griswold, President of S.T. Griswold & Company, Inc., describes his medium. He should know; his family has been in the business almost that long. Founded in Vermont in 1957 by Doug's father, Steele T. Griswold, S.T. Griswold is the brainchild of an ingenious entrepreneur who discovered a need and filled it.
As he watched individual batches of concrete mixed on-site at Burlington's then fledgling airport, Steele knew there was a better way. He decide that large batches of concrete should be mixed at the plant and delivered to the site ready-to-use, thus saving hours of labor and ensuring consistent product batches.
S.T. Griswold started with one plant and six trucks and grew from there. In 1960, the company was commissioned to provide 100,000 cubic yards for a single project. At that time, this quantity of concrete was unheard-of in the industry and represented four times the company's total annual yardage. Such a huge, unprecedented job could easily make or break a young company, but Steele Griswold rose to the challenge. He exceeded expectations; and his successful management of logistical acrobatics, demanding production requirements, and strict deadlines proved S.T. Griswold would become a leading force in Vermont's construction industry. The company now has five ready-mix plants, four retail outlets, one quarry, a fleet of 80 trucks, and over 200 employees.
As the company grew, so too did the magnitude of its projects, facilities, and involvement in the local community. S.T. Griswold is presently participating in the largest single building project in the history of the State of Vermont, the Fletcher Allen Health Care Renaissance Project.
